"Bournemouth Cricket Club is believed to be one of the largest cricket clubs in the country. At senior level, this season we are running five men's sides each Saturday throughout the season, two Sunday XI’s and a ladies team, as well as two midweek teams on Wednesday evenings. This is complemented by training sessions on Thursday evenings at which a bowling machine will be available."
Our flagship Saturday 1st and 2nd XI's play in Divisions 1 and 3 of the prestigious Southern Electric Premier Cricket League, a competition which the Club won in 1984 and 1996, and finished runner's up in 1997 and 2003. The Clubs third XI plays in Division 1 of the Dorset Funeral Plan Cricket League, the fourth XI plays in Regional Division 2 South West of the Hampshire League and the 5th XI in Division 7 of the Dorset Funeral Plan Cricket League.
At colts level, we will be running 15 teams for boys and girls from under 9s through to under 15's, complemented by weekly practice and coaching sessions, run by 1st XI captain Darren Cowley and overseen by former Hampshire and Gloucestershire all rounder Richard Scott, who is the Club's Director of Cricket, and former Somerset CCC bowler Rob Coombs, who is now the Club's Chairman. The Club's colts teams have enjoyed much success in recent years, which was capped in August 2005 by our Under 15's, who were crowned county, regional and ultimately national champions of the ECB Portman Building Society National Club Championship. This was a tremendous achievement considering over 1600 teams entered the competition.
The playing facilities at Bournemouth Sports Club where the cricket club is based, are renowned for being of the highest quality. The Club has four pitches available for its use, three of which have grass squares, and two pavilions, the second of which was constructed last year thanks to a £50,000 grant from the ECB's Community Club Development Fund, a £1000 grant from the Dorset Sports Council and fundraising undertaken by the Club over many years. £25,000 of the grant money from SITA was used on new nets, a bowling machine and a score box for pitch 2. In September 2000, Chapel Gate hosted the Minor Counties Championship Final between Dorset CCC and Cumberland CCC, whilst in September 2004, the Club was used as a base by the Australian and West Indies cricket teams as these nations prepared for the ICC Champion Trophy. Chapel Gate has also been the home of the national finals of the ECB Portman Building Society Under 15 National Club Championship for the last three years.
The Club prides itself on being able to offer cricket and coaching for players of all ages and abilities, and for an active social calendar off the field, centred mainly around the varied entertainment venues in Bournemouth town centre. If you are interested in playing for the Club or finding out more information about the facilities on offer, please e-mail bournemouthcc@hotmail.com and one of our committee members will get in touch with you.
